Toyota Urban Cruiser EBELLA : India’s Wait for a Real Toyota EV Is Finally Over!

After many years of Toyota pushing out hybrids and saying “EV is coming soon”, they’re finally introducing their all electric vehicle called Urban Cruiser EV in India on or about January 19-20, 2026. Thank goodness!

The Urban Cruiser EV is built on the same platform as the upcoming Maruti e-Vitara, due to the alliance between Toyota and Suzuki. Unlike the e-Vitara, this car is a huge step towards Toyota’s entry into India’s growing electric vehicle market. With a mid-size SUV profile, the Urban Cruiser EV will compete directly against Tata Nexon EV Max and MG ZS EV while showing off the trustworthiness of owning a Toyota Vehicle.

The Urban Cruiser EV comes with two options of batteries. One would be a 49 kWh battery for city driving. The other option, which Toyota refers to as the “long-distance battery” would be a 61 kWh battery pack. Toyota claims that this larger battery can go up to 543 km as per ARAI testing but I expect that it will deliver a range of approximately between 380-420 km in real world driving conditions. This should meet all of the daily travel needs for the majority of its owners and should carry them to their desired weekend destination.

The best part about this vehicle is that it will charge up from a 10% to 80% state of charge using a DC fast charger in\, less than 45 minutes! You would be able to stop by a highway dhaba restaurant for a break during your road trip and quickly get back on the road!

Inside of the Urban Cruiser EV, Toyota is stepping up their game. You’ll have access to Level-2 ADAS (Adaptive Cruise Control | Lane Assist | Auto Braking) | 360 degree cameras (Hallelujah narrow lane!) | Wireless Apple CarPlay / Android Auto on a high quality Digital Cockpit.

Prior to now, Toyota has been kind of in the dark about electric vehicles but has finally entered the Indian electric vehicle world with two EV Touring editions, the Urban Cruiser EV Edition and the Urban Cruiser EV Limited Edition. Both models include plenty of features via the Toyota App, including pre-cooling the vehicle cabin, charging status and a variety of safety features including six airbags, electronic stability control, hill hold, etc. So no base model compromises!

While making the Urban Cruiser EV, Toyota spent a lot of time focusing on design—with it’s closed front grille, sleek LED lighting, possibly even having flush door handles! The interior will also be very spacious thanks to flat EV floor design giving the passenger area extra room. Toyota understands that cars last a long time in India and will design for long term usability.

In terms of pricing, expect to pay around ₹16.5-17.5 lakh for the 49 kWh variant and the 61 kWh for around ₹18.5-19.5lakh (ex-showroom). The Urban Cruiser is more expensive than the Nexon EV but if you believe in the superiority of Toyota build quality, durability and resale value, $20000 is worth it for the “Peace of Mind” you’ll have.

Toyota’s introduction of EVs signifies India is truly entering into the electric vehicle age. By entering into EV manufacturing, a well-respected company known for “never breaks down,” tells the Indian consumer that it is SAFE to switch to Electric. This vehicle is not a performance vehicle; it is designed for real world families and would expect many, many years of trouble-free operation—all the trust of a Toyota is worth its weight in Lithium.
